"FALE CERTO" - WEBSÉRIE - Episódio 01 -

 Amigos, hoje às 20 horas entrou no ar, o primeiro vídeo da série FALE CERTO. Desde que passei a fazer parte de uma minoria, há 27 anos, percebo como as palavras mal empregadas e usadas por hábito machucam e causam sofrimentos. São falas pequenas, despretensiosas, mas para nós o FALE CERTO é uma grande conquista. Peço a vocês que leiam, reflitam e compartilhem. Gratidão. (Odette Castro).

Episode 1: "retarded"

Just after my daughter Beatriz was born I met a colleague from work who said to me: 'What's going on, Odette? People are saying your daughter is retarded.'
That was a shock for me, a shock about the word "retarded".

I spent the whole day thinking: my daughter is retarded. Beatriz is retarded. I spelt it loud 're-tar-ded'. I couldn't really grasp the meaning of the word so I consulted the dictionary. 
There, in front of me, the dictionary spelt it. Retarded: a person with slow movement, a person less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for one's age.
Then I thought. That's correct. Beatriz is retarded but what I couldn't see was the negative meaning people place on the word. That made me think of words and how we use them in a wrong way, in a derogatory way. This is when I created this project 'Speak Correctly'
